At Dairyko, we speak daily with our network of suppliers throughout Greece to monitor PDO feta supply, pricing and availability. While some producers are reporting pressure on milk supplies, availability varies across our network. Please continue to enquire, and we will do our best to help with your requirements.

Some of our suppliers have highlighted increasing pressure on sheep’s milk cheese, which is affecting their capacity to take on additional orders. Availability varies between producers, so these reports do not mean that all suppliers are in the same position.

We want to keep our customers informed about the current market while continuing to help them source the products they need. If you have a requirement for PDO feta, please continue to enquire with Dairyko. Our team will speak with our suppliers and do its best to find a suitable option.

Why is there a sheep’s milk shortage in Greece?

Greece’s dairy sector has faced livestock disease outbreaks, including foot and mouth disease and, sheep and goat pox. The resulting loss and culling of animals have reduced the milk available to cheese producers.

To Vima reported that Greek sheep’s milk production fell by 7.4% in the first seven months of 2026, compared with the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, ProtoThema reported an industry estimate of an 80,000-tonne shortfall in sheep’s milk. This is an industry estimate, but it illustrates the scale of the supply concerns being raised by Greek producers.

Rebuilding flocks and restoring milk production takes time. Alongside continued international demand for Greek feta, this is placing pressure on both raw material costs and finished cheese availability.

How does this affect PDO feta production?

PDO stands for Protected Designation of Origin. Authentic PDO feta is produced in designated regions of Greece using sheep’s milk, or a mixture of sheep’s milk and up to 30% goat’s milk.

Its geographical origin, ingredients and production methods are essential to its identity, as explained in the European Commission’s guide to Feta PDO.

Because PDO feta depends on suitable milk from these regions, reduced milk supplies can limit the amount producers are able to make. Some dairies are therefore managing new enquiries carefully while fulfilling existing customer commitments.

What are our suppliers telling us about PDO feta supply?

Feedback from some of our Greek suppliers points to higher milk costs, tighter stock levels and less flexibility for additional volume orders. For certain requirements, the challenge is securing the quantity needed as well as agreeing a price.

However, the situation differs across our supplier network. Availability can depend on the producer, product format, order quantity and delivery date.

Our daily conversations with suppliers help us assess individual enquiries against current availability. Whether you need PDO feta cheese, PDO feta cubes or another format, we encourage you to share your requirements so we can explore the options.
